This report compares the full ten-year lifecycle cost of a natural lawn against an artificial-turf lawn on a typical 500 sq ft Aurora backyard, using published figures from York Region installer price guides, a GTA sod supplier, the Town of Aurora's 2026 water rates and Environment and Climate Change Canada climate normals. A mid-grade artificial lawn costs $6,500 to $9,000 installed against roughly $1,000 to establish sod, but the natural lawn then carries a recurring maintenance stack of about $1,619 per year when professionally serviced, driven in part by Aurora's $6.06/m³ combined water rate. Over ten years the artificial lawn totals $8,500, the serviced natural lawn $17,190, and a do-it-yourself natural lawn $5,190 plus roughly 300 hours of the owner's time; break-even against serviced care arrives in about four years, while against DIY care it does not arrive at all in cash terms.
